Floor Vent Sizing and Matching Guide
The single most common floor vent mistake is buying based on the old cover's size instead of the actual duct opening underneath it. Pull the old vent, measure the rough opening, and match your new one to that number, not the decorative trim. From there it's a choice between flush-mount metal vents, framed designer vents, or unfinished wood vents stained to match your new hardwood.
Step 1: Measure the Duct Opening, Not the Old Cover
Decorative floor vent covers are almost always larger than the duct hole beneath them, since the frame needs to overlap the finished floor on all sides. If you measure the visible cover and buy a same-size replacement, you'll often end up with a vent that doesn't seat properly in the actual opening.
Before you shop:
- Remove the old vent cover completely.
- Measure the rough duct opening in the subfloor with a tape measure, width and length, to the nearest 1/4".
- Compare that number to the frame or damper dimensions listed on the new vent, not just the nominal size in the product name.
4x10 vs. 4x12: There's No Universal Standard
Both 4"x10" and 4"x12" are common residential floor register sizes, and which one you have depends on your home's original HVAC design. There's genuine variation across builders, decades, and even room-to-room within the same house. Don't assume based on what a neighbour's house has; measure your specific opening every time you're replacing a vent.
Flush-Mount / Framed vs. Drop-In
Most residential floor vents are flush-mount (framed). The frame sits on top of the finished floor, level with the surface, and the damper mechanism sits inside the duct opening below.
