Why Choose Walnut Flooring
Walnut is the species you pick when you want the floor to be the feature. American black walnut has a deep chocolate heartwood with purple-brown undertones, a flowing straight-to-wavy grain and creamy sapwood streaks that give each plank character. No stain needed — the colour is in the wood, so it never looks painted-on and it ages gracefully rather than fading to orange.
At BBS Flooring we stock walnut from Canadian Standard (Origins 7½" American walnut), Vidar (American black walnut), Simba, NAF (exotic walnut, engineered and solid) and our own BBS Reserve label. Every floor below is in stock and priced per square foot.
What to Know Before You Buy Walnut
- It's softer than oak. American walnut rates about 1010 on the Janka scale vs 1360 for white oak. It is still a solid hardwood floor, but it will dent more easily under dropped pans or dog claws. A wire-brushed or hand-scraped texture hides this well, and a satin finish is more forgiving than high gloss.
- Engineered is the smart build. A 3/4" engineered plank with a walnut wear layer gives you the look at a lower price per square foot, with far better stability over concrete, in condos and over radiant heat.
- Colour mellows with light. Unlike most species, walnut lightens slightly over the first year or two in strong sun. Rotate area rugs occasionally and it evens out.
- Character grade is the look. Most of our walnut is Character (ABCD) grade — knots, sapwood and colour variation are the point. Select & Better (AB) is available for a cleaner, more uniform floor.
- "Exotic walnut" is a different tree. NAF's exotic walnut is a South American species with a similar warm-brown tone and a harder surface than American black walnut — a good pick for busier households.
Walnut Look for Less: Laminate & Vinyl
Want the walnut colour in a kitchen, basement or rental without the hardwood price? We carry walnut-look options in laminate and waterproof vinyl plank — search "walnut" in those collections. They won't match real walnut's grain depth, but they are scratch- and water-resistant and start under $2/sqft.
