How to use Ardex P 51 Primer (1 gal)

  1. 1Make sure the concrete is clean, dry and free of paint, sealers, curing compounds, or oil before priming.
  2. 2For standard absorbent concrete, dilute Ardex P 51 1 part primer to 1 part water by volume.
  3. 3For extremely absorbent or dusty concrete, use the "double-prime" method: dilute 1 part primer to 3 parts water for the first coat, then apply a second coat at 1:1.
  4. 4Roll or brush it on evenly — coverage runs about 400–600 sq ft per gallon depending on how absorbent the slab is.
  5. 5You’ll know it’s dry when the milky primer turns clear; drying takes a minimum of about 3 hours and up to 24 hours depending on temperature and airflow.
  6. 6Only apply your self-leveler, patch compound or adhesive once the primer is fully dry — never pour or spread over wet or tacky primer.

FAQ

Do I always need to prime before pouring a self-leveler?

On absorbent concrete, yes — nearly every self-leveling underlayment manufacturer requires a compatible primer first so the leveler doesn’t dry too fast at the surface and lose its bond. Skipping the primer is one of the most common causes of a self-leveler failing to bond.
